Spectre – A Halloween Group Show It
is a part of our common history; from our childhood fear of the haunted
house down the street, to attempting to contact the dead through a
séance or Ouija Board. As a society we are obsessed with the idea of
ghosts. In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost
is the soul or spirit of a dead person that can appear, in visible form
or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts
vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible
wispy shapes, to realistic, lifelike visions. Ghosts are generally
described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects,
or people, though stories of phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted. This
is not an easy call for submissions. You will be required to think
outside of the “white sheet”. How does one capture, the essence, emotion
and the mystery surrounding something so intimate and personal. Let us
summon the creative spirits that they might guide us in telling their
tale. In the meantime try not to get spooked!
This juried show will take place October 19, 2013 – November 3, 2013, with an opening reception on Oct.19 from 2-5pm. We
are asking that artists submit only two images. Remember, the jury only
has your image to base its decision on so the quality of your photo is
very important. Be sure to attach your image as a jpeg and that it is a
large file. Images for consideration, not the actual work, must be emailed to the gallery by Sept 21, 2013. (info@swoonfineart.com) Submissions will be reviewed by a jury, and artists will be notified of the results by phone or email. Work must have been created within the last year and must not have been previously shown. Artists can submit up to two works and should include the size, price and medium of each piece. Artists in all mediums are encouraged to participate. (Note
– If framing is required- works on paper should contain a single white
matt and a simple black frame; works on canvas (2” stretchers) that are
unframed must have finished edges and works on canvas that require
frames (thin stretchers) should be in a simple black frame) All accepted work must be delivered to Swoon on, or before, Oct.12th, 2013.
I look forward to being haunted by your submissions!

"Rug Talk" - March 23rd
Rug Talk...
In conjunction with our current
exhibition RUGS AS ART - Antique Islamic
Carpets and Related Textiles
- Swoon is pleased to present an informal talk by artist and carpet collector
Jed Irwin.
The talk will be at Swoon,
1410 Hammonds
Plains Road, on Saturday 23 March at 1 p.m. All are welcome.
Jed Irwin is a visual artist
who has recently moved from the west coast to
Mahone Bay. He became
interested in oriental rugs in the mid-1980s while
teaching in the art
department at the University
of Calgary, where he is
now Associate Professor
Emeritus; he was a founder-member of the Calgary
Rug and Textile Club. From the mid-80s through the late 1990s he
made
numerous visits to Turkey,
dividing his time between the art community -
he had two solo exhibitions
of his work in Istanbul
galleries - and the
carpet world, studying the
materials firsthand, developing personal
relations with the carpet
dealers, and building his own collection.
The talk will touch on Jed's
personal experiences as a collector in
Turkey, as well as on the history, esthetics and techniques
of the
rug making peoples and their
culture, He will supplement the textiles
on
exhibition at Swoon with
additional pieces not shown due to space
limitations.
There is no seating but feel
free to bring a folding chair!
See you Swoon!

Call for Submissions: Farm Life
Swoon –
Fine Art & Antiques Presents:
Farm Life
- A Group Show
From fields and pastures, to the
people, animals and machinery, there is unlimited inspiration found on the
farm. Swoon – Fine Art & Antiques is looking for artists and fine craftspeople
to capture the spirit of Farm Life for our next juried group show.
This juried show will take place July
6, 2013 – July 28, 2013, with an opening reception on July.6th from
2-5pm.
After the huge response to our last
call for submissions, we are asking that artists submit only two images. If your
work is chosen, only one piece will be selected. There is only room for
approximately 30 pieces, depending on medium and size (keeping in mind that we
had 196 submissions for Winterscene) Remember, the jury only has your image to
base its decision on so the quality of your photo is very important. Be sure to
attach your image as a jpeg and that it is a large file.
Images
for consideration, not the actual work, must be emailed to the gallery by June 5, 2013.
(info@swoonfineart.com)
Submissions will be reviewed by a jury, and artists will be notified of the
results by phone or email.
Work must have been created
within the last year and must not have been previously shown. Artists can
submit up to two works and should include the size, price and medium of
each piece. Artists in all mediums are encouraged to participate.

I look forward to seeing your
submissions!
